Need to replace a missing tooth and wondering if dental implants are the right option for you? If so, chances are good that you might havedental implant questions about implants and how they work. Don’t worry—our Chatham, NY, general dentist Dr. Domenic Riccobono has you covered. Here’s what you should know about dental implants:

How does a dental implant work?

A dental implant is a metal “tooth root” that is placed within the jawbone to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth. The implant itself is a small titanium screw or post, which won’t be visible when you smile. This provides the long-term foundation from which to support your false tooth. Since the implant is made from titanium (a biocompatible metal), it will naturally meld together with the jawbone as it grows around it.

What is involved in getting a dental implant?

You will need to undergo surgery in order to get a dental implant, however, the surgical procedure is fast, simple, and can be performed by our Chatham, NY, dentist. During this minor surgery, we will numb the area with local anesthesia before placing the implant directly into the jaw. Depending on how many implants are being placed and where, treatment takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.

How long does it take to heal after surgery?

It can take anywhere from 2-6 months for the implant to fully integrate with the jawbone. We will give ample time for the bone to fully heal and grow around the implant before placing the false tooth (also known as a dental crown).

What makes someone a good candidate for treatment?

From severe decay to gum disease, there are many reasons that someone may lose a tooth. Fortunately, as long as you have good oral health and no untreated or uncontrolled gum disease, then you could be an ideal candidate for implants. During a consultation, our dentist will examine your teeth and gums, taking x-rays to make sure that the jawbone is healthy enough to support an implant. Certain lifestyle factors and health conditions could also affect your candidacy, so it is important to be upfront during your consultation.
